DUBAI: Heavy rain and flood across Sudan have intensified over the week, affecting thousands of people’s homes and livelihoods, a United Nations agency said.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the rains led to damages to houses and infrastructures, particularly in the hard-hit areas of Khartoum, Blue Nile and River Nile.

Many people have been displaced because of the disaster, as the heavy rainfall also hampered crop production, and increased the rise of disease outbreaks.

The number of affected people is “expected to rise,” the UN agency said, indicating that 400,000 people were impacted during the whole season last year.

Sudan is often hit by torrential rains between June and October.
